Dave Roberts discussed Roki Sasaki’s return to the Dodgers bullpen, Shohei Ohtani’s expected activation and several important postseason roster decisions.
Sasaki is expected to enter at the beginning of a clean inning and could pitch two innings in his first appearance. Roberts said using Sasaki as a closer in October is “certainly an option,” although the Dodgers currently do not have one designated closer.
“I trust Roki in any situation.”
Roberts also revealed:
Sasaki could pitch multiple innings
A postseason closer role remains possible
The Dodgers currently favor a closer-by-committee approach
Ohtani is expected to return Wednesday
Ohtani has improved from a “five” to an “eight or nine”
Andy Pages is ready to play nine innings
Josue De Paula has been “fantastic”
De Paula and Dalton Rushing are competing for a bench role
Blake Snell is scheduled to pitch Saturday
Tarik Skubal is scheduled to pitch Friday
Brock Stewart and Evan Phillips could also close games
Roberts said Ohtani will complete coach-pitch batting practice and his normal workout, but the Dodgers expect him to be activated Wednesday unless something changes.
